PDF Too Large? Here's How to Reduce It

There's usually a specific wall you've hit: an upload portal rejecting the file, an email bouncing, a storage quota warning. The fix depends a little on why the file got large in the first place.
First, figure out why it's large
- Lots of photographs or scanned pages: this is the most common cause, and compression helps the most here.
- A handful of pages but still huge: check for embedded fonts, attachments, or forms with lots of fields, compression helps less in this case.
- Hundreds of pages: even well-compressed, a genuinely long document stays large, splitting it is often more useful than compressing it further.
The quickest fix

Why is my PDF so much bigger than the document it was made from?
Usually because it was created by scanning or printing to PDF rather than exporting digitally, both processes tend to embed full-resolution page images instead of clean text and vector graphics.
I compressed it and it's still too large, what now?
Check whether the file actually contains many pages of scanned images rather than a handful, compression has a ceiling, and a 200-page scanned document will stay large even at the lowest setting. Splitting it into smaller files is usually the practical answer at that point.
